The Importance of Place

What gives a neighborhood character are its people, its buildings, its history and its intangible heritage.

Here you'll find excerpts from an interview with Janice Stanton and her son Bobby who is BOI. Janice has lived on Avenue O for more than 60 years.

These clips talk about Galveston's sense of community, how the threat of storms creates a shared experience and how this place is truly unique.  In the last excerpt, Janice talks about living in Galveston during the period of desegregation (integration).  This background is relevant as we confront the ongoing issues of inequality today.

Oral histories are treasures that we leave to future generations. This exhibit is created to be expanded. If you would like to add excerpts to this project, contact the neighborhood association.
